Having good grades in SG is one thing but so is student allowance. If you are a SG student or still studying, I encourage you to set aside a tight allowance every month to avoid overspending.

One way is to set aside maximum 1/5 of your current salary. eg after cpf your salary is $1.5k. Your allowance will be 1/5 x $1.5k = $300 (have the habit to save the remaining or give to your parents)

That $300 will be your allowance for the entire month. Here are some rules that I personally follow everyday...

1) Have your meals in school or bought by your parents. From my experience, food is the thing that most students will spend their allowance on. Hence, persuade your parents to help cover it as much as possible. Try to avoid buying your own food unless neccessary.

2) Keep every meal under $5. For those that like to eat out, I recommend spending less than $5 for every meal. If you find it hard, try to take it as a challenge. Remember to use the budget meal go where website if you are not able to find anywhere that fits your budget.

3) Get concession. If you do the math, getting a student concession will help you lower your transport cost by a lot. Highly recommend if you are still a student. Unless your parents owns a car and are willing to fetch you to school.

4) Share meal with friend(s). This was such a game changer cause you and friends get to order a larger portion of food but pay lesser as to if everybody were to pay for their own meals.

5) Look out for freebies which includes gifts, promotions by fnb brands, student discounts, etc.

A good habit is to also track your allowance spending every month to make sure that you did not overspend. These tips really helped me back then hence I hope it will help students in the future as well.

xoxo bye bye
