Getting Into Veiling!

I’ve been trying to make my faith a more intentional and personal thing in my life. Something that’s “mine”, not just things my parents taught me, if that makes sense? Because of this, I decided to start veiling at Mass!

This used to be a relatively common practice in Catholicism, but it declined in popularity around the 1960’s, with Vatican II and the culture changing in general. At least in my area, it’s seen as a an older, more traditional thing. You’d probably find more women veiling in a city or a place where Catholicism is more common, but around here you’d stick out. This was part of the reason I was hesitant to veil at first.

However, veiling has had a resurgence, especially with millennial women, apparently. I’d look up Catholic veiling online and find a lot of younger looking women wearing veils, talking about their collections of them, and talking about what drew them to the practice. Some even wear cloth veils all the time, not just at Mass! I also saw a few young girls at my church veiling, and seeing that I wouldn’t be alone gave me the confidence to look into buying some.

While wearing them, I definitely attract a bit of attention. Some people do stare or look at me differently, since it’s still uncommon at my parish. But, I try not to let this affect me. I go to church to connect with God, not to worry about what people think of me.
