Tips for creating swirl nails at home 💙

When I don’t know what design to do on my nails, but I don’t want plain and I want something a little more interesting than a French manicure, I always choose a swirl design. You can mix up swirl nails in so many different ways: multi-color, chrome, glitter, the list goes on - and they’re surprisingly simple to create!

Step 1: Paint your base color. I went for a pink-ish nude here (my favorite is the rubber base in Perfectionst by Esvy). If you’re using gel polish, make sure to cure between each coat. If you’re using regular polish, it’s always easier to paint designs once the base is fully dry.

Step 2: Paint the swirls using a liner brush. If your polish didn’t come with a liner brush, you can use a separate liner brush dipped in the polish (happy to provide my recommendations for brushes if you’re in the market.) The best way to become confident in swirls is practice, but there are some tricks I think help as well.

• Make sure you don’t have too much polish on your brush. A small amount of polish will make it easier to paint thin, even lines. Wipe off excess on the bottle and double check around the top of the brush as well. Sometimes the excess polish gets caught up there and can drip onto your nail while painting, so we definitely want to avoid that!

• As you are painting your swirls, pay attention to any tension in the brush or awkward angle you may reach. If you feel you are losing control of the brush, lift it up, get the angle right and continue with the swirl. Realizing I could lift the brush and continue once I was comfortable was a huge game changer for me.

• My favorite part about using gel - if you don’t like a swirl you painted, simply use a clean up brush dipped in acetone to straighten out any edges or remove the line completely.

Step 3: After you’ve cured your swirls (or let dry if using regular polish), apply a top coat. I’m a firm believer top coat makes everything look better. Cure the top coat & you’re done!
