My husband and I recently got married in September of this year. We bought this home in October 2023. This house was his great Grandmother’s home and we had the privilege of buying it!!

We both understood how hard it would be to fix this old house into the home we were dreaming of.

We agreed all of the things we were able to do ourselves we would NOT be paying someone to do.

We are both pretty young, me being 24 and my husband 26 and we know nothing about remodeling a house…

We knew one of the first things we needed to do was rip up this 50 year old carpet 🤢….. yes I’m serious, it is 50 years old…. When we started ripping up the carpet our jaws hit the floor… The BEAUTIFUL hard wood flooring that had been preserved underneath this carpet took our breath away. We didn’t have to do anything to this flooring but clean it, it’s in perfect condition.

However, we have a small square of linoleum flooring by the front door that will not come up 🙁!! The glue they used is stuck to the hardwood flooring. Not even a steamer will bring it up off of the floor 😢… We have talked about some ideas to cover this up and still keep the beautiful hardwood. Nothing is set and stone yet but we are considering grout and a rock type tile. We are wanting to box it in to create a space for people to remove their shoes before tracking mud and dirt through the house.

The next most challenging thing I have ever done was paint this dark paneling. I absolutely HATED it with a passion. I felt like I was living in a dungeon it was so dark and depressing. If you have paneling no judgement at all!! I actually love the look of paneling but hate dark walls. My husband was very worried about painting it and thought it would be near to impossible to do so…

so we compromised and… painted it 🤣😭!!

When we first started to apply paint… my oh my was it absolutely terrifying 🥲… I thought to myself “maybe I should have listened to my husband on this one…” but I did not give up. I continued painting one wall before moving on just to make sure it would cover the color with the paint I chose before I moved on.

I had to take a small paint brush and paint every single crack at least twice if not three times… it took 3 and a half gallons of paint. I started painting at 1pm and was determined to get it finished so I only took 2 breaks and painted until 4:30 in the morning. I had blisters on my hands from painting so much. I woke up the next day around 10am and went straight back to painting. 2 o’clock rolled around and our electric went out due to the hurricane (we live far from the hurricane so it was more like thunderstorm weather) but I opened my big picture window and had enough light to continue painting 😅!! I didn’t get finished until 6pm and I was completely exhausted but the end results are completely worth it. My husband was so happy I talked him into doing this and I love it so much!! ❤️

Flooring: $0 (linoleum cover up not included yet.)

Walls: $100

Total: $100 for paint ❤️

What do you think??? Was the back breaking work worth it? 🤔

Honest opinions are welcome! I love constructive criticism. If you don’t like it you have the right to express your own opinion 🫶🏻
