พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์สยาม รัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เสด็จ พระราชสมภพเมื่อวันอังคาร เดือน 10 แรม 3 ค่ำ ปีฉลู 20 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2396 เป็นพระราชโอรสองค์ที่ 9 ในพระบาทสมเด็จ พระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และเป็นที่ 1 ในสมเด็จพระเทพศิรินทราบรมราชินี เสวยราชสมบัติ เมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี เดือน 11 ขึ้น 15 ค่ำ ปีมะโรง (พ.ศ. 2411) รามสิริดำรงราชสมบัติ 42 ปี 22 วัน

ความสำคัญของวันปิยมหาราช

การเลิกทาส พระราชกรณียกิจอันสำคัญยิ่ง ที่ทำให้พระองค์ทรงได้รับ พระสมัญญาว่า “สมเด็จพระปิยมหาราช” ก็คือ "การเด็กทาส” สมัยที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้า ฯ เสด็จขึ้นเสวยราชสมบัตินั้น ประเทศไทยมีทาสเป็นจำนวนกว่า หนึ่งในสามของพลเมือง

วันที่ 23 ตุลาคม 2453 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงประชวรเสด็จสวรรคต ณ พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถานพระราชวัง ดุสิต ครั้นนั้นเป็นที่เศร้าสลดอย่างใหญ่หลวง ของพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์และปวงชนทั่วประเทศ

ทุกๆ วันที่ 23 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี จะเป็นวันที่พวกเราชาวไทยไม่เลือกว่าเป็นเด็กหรือผู้ใหญ่ ผู้ชายหรือผู้หญิง พร้อมใจกันไปถวายบังคมพระบรม รูปทรงม้า
