To start; the history behind hair bonnets is deeply intertwined with African cultures. They root in tradition attires and have been associated with the embracing of black women’s hair, resilience and cultural identity. I think it is incredibly important to establish that first and foremost. This is by no means a new practice, or something I believe should be considered “discovered” by myself. It does matter to establish the history 🤍

As a licensed cosmetologist I heavily recommend to all clients, wear a silk bonnet to sleep ! More often than not our sheets are cotton and that causes a lot of friction between your hair and the pillow cases, this can result in breakage and frizz and split ends . The benefits are a no brained, for those with fine hair (like my self) after one nights use I can visibly see a difference and feel a difference in my hair. There is more shine and overall more hydration. Bonnets are a tool that all hair types can benefit from!

How I use :

1) if it is a night where I am washing my hair I will always oil my hair with any strengthening oil and give my hair a ruff blow dry (DO NOT sleep with wet hair, your hair is at its most fragile state when wet)

2) I will tuck my hair completely in and sleep as normal! Easy as can be!

3) If I feel I need some extra moisture and have not washed my hair that day, I will oil my ends again and proceed with my bonnet as normal!

I hope this helps with your hair health journey and helps you u def stand the origin of bonnets and their cultural significance before you jump into using them yourself🤍
