A Guide to Mount Pilatus At Lucerne, Switzerland🏔🇨🇭

If you are visiting Lucerne in Switzerland, do not miss the opportunity to take a day trip to the beautiful Mount Pilatus! It is home to the steepest cogwheel railway you’ll find anywhere on earth, making the trip a thrilling ride as well as a very picturesque one. Without further ado, here’s my guide to visit Mount Pilatus!

🚂🚠 How to get there

There are several ways to get to the top and I will be sharing with you the way I got up, with Swiss Travel Pass.

1. Ascend

🚂 Train from Lucerne > Alpnachstad (Free with swiss travel pass)

🚠 Cogwheel from Alpnachstad > Pilatus (CHF36 with Swiss travel pass - 50% off)

2. Descend

🚡 Cableway and gondolas from Pilatus > Kriens

🚂 Train from Kriens > Lucerne

🏔 What activities to do

1. Hike to the Viewpoints

We climb up to two of the view points, the Dragon’s Walk and the Flower Trail to the Tomlishorn. Both is a short loop of steps that passes through the mountain. Take your time here to pause and take scenic pictures!

1. Toboggan ride (CHF8/ride)

We rode the toboggan and it’s awesome! Enjoy the mountain scenery and drift past the nearby cows, munching on grass, their bells creating a sort of alpine music that just seems so…Swiss!

⏳ How long to spend there

I would recommend around 4-6 hours for the whole experience and activity! Also, do pack your lunch box up if you want to avoid spending hefty prices on their food up the mountain!

💡What to prepare

I would recommend to pack a windbreaker as it might get pretty chilly up there! Consider checking local weather forecasts for days with clear visibility and always equip a pair of good walking shoes too! Do take note of their transport schedule as well as they tend to operate till around 4-6pm!
