This little sci-fi novella packed a punchhhh. This is THE series if you want to read about Black women thriving in STEM with a mix of afro-futurism. The main character Binti, is a himba girl who is very intelligent and excels in math. She gets into a very prestigious university and becomes the first Himba to leave the planet for college. On the voyage to the off-planet university, the ship is attacked and she remains as the only survivor. I love the ode to Himba culture. Binti talks a lot about the Otjize (the red clay) that she applies to her skin and hair and the magical properties behind it.
