Social Media Fast

“Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” (Col. 3:1-2 MSG)

For months leading up to lent, I knew God and my family wanted me to take a break from social media. I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to “go dark” so that I could see the Light.

With a lot of reluctance I agreed to give up social media for lent. I REALLY did not want to. My phone was a crutch. It was my escape. It was also pulling me away from my family, and causing anxiety.

I wish I would have done this sooner. I wasn’t caught up in the latest negative news. I wasn’t envious of someone else’s home or life. I wasn’t short with my kids, because I was distracted. I read actual books, nine in fact. I had a cleaner home. I was more present.

Now that I am back, I plan to take my 40-days of devotion and make that a lifetime of devotion. To look up from my phone and see the people and needs around me. To set boundaries and put Him first.

If you feel God calling you to set your phone down, I urge you to listen. Draw near to Him.
