This Chinese style steamed tofu has all the great flavour of a Cantonese steamed fish, with cilantro and the aromatic sweet and savoury sauce, but with a more affordable protein – tofu! Steaming tofu is one of my go-to ways to prepare tofu at home whenever I wanted something hearty to enjoy with rice or even congee.
This recipe is extremely versatile. You can adjust the sauce according to your preference and you can opt to either steam your tofu or just eat it cold. I would highly recommend you steam your tofu which serves two purposes:
1. To remove the moisture from the soft tofu and make the texture silkier
2. To get rid of the raw soybean taste from the uncooked tofu
Who doesn’t like a warm and hearty dish to pair with a warm bowl of steamed rice right?
INGREDIENTS
1 block silken tofu
Sauce:
1.5 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp oyster sauce
½ tsp sugar
A dash of pepper
Garnish:
Chopped coriander
Sesame seeds
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Remove the tofu from the packaging and slice it into ½ inch thick. Arrange the tofu in a steaming plate and set aside.
2. For the sauce, simply mix everything together in a bowl.
3. Drain any excess liquid that seep out from the tofu.
4. Bring a pot of water to boil and steam the tofu for 8-10 minutes.
5. Drain the excess water from the tofu after steaming and pour the prepared sauce over.
6. Garnish the tofu with coriander and sesame seeds and enjoy!
