Tips to become an HR Professional

I’ve been in the HR field for 3 years now with a big company and wanted to share my advice for obtaining a career in the HR Field. I am not an expert but these are the tips that helped me.

Education:

•look at programs that either offer a degree in HR management or business management

• look at options of obtaining a HR certification such as the SHRM or PHR

Experience:

• look at HR job applications to see skills/experience they are looking for. See if you can incorporate some of those skills in your current role

•If you work at a company that will allow internal transfers into HR, see if you can seek guidance or participate in HR initiatives. Also a good opportunity to network

Internal transfer opportunities:

• If you are able to transfer internally to a role where you can perform some HR duties, it can help build up your resume for applying to a role. Especially if you don’t have the degree. Some companies value experience more than education

•Check if your company is hiring in the HR department. If you are already familiar with the company and people, you can get a good referral.

I personally don’t have a degree in HR nor a certification but i had a few years of people leader experience, program planning experience, and drove some HR initiatives with which helped me land a role in HR ultimately.
