The truth about Accutane…

It sucks but it’s worth it!!

In 2022 my skin was at its all time worst and I finally talked to my dermatologist about accutane. I started with an aggressive dosage but we lowered it due to the intensity of the side effects. This is what I experienced…

- first my skin purged. It pushed all of the bad stuff out at once. This is normal and it passed fairly quickly

- I started experiencing joint aches- another expected side effect

- severe dryness. Doctors recommended I use Vaseline and aquaphor on my lips *constantly* and I could only use dove soap and cetaphil lotions (unscented and extremely hydrating- I actually still use their eczema lotion as my daily lotion although the dryness of accutane has not had a lasting impact)

I didn’t stay on accutane for the duration that I should have (7-8 months, I only did 5) because I was out of state and visits to the derm got inconvenient. I could use it again for a short period of time but I’m pretty happy with my skin, even with the occasional break out. The side effect were worth it for a while but not to go back!
