What I used:
2ft x 3ft stretch canvas
tape (not necessary but helped to space out the letters)
wood glue
gesso
lightweight joint compound
gloves
pallet knife
metallic paint (optional)
How:
- I started by measuring out the letters. To do this I started with “YORK” beginning 3 inches in from the left edge of the canvas and 3 inches up from the bottom. I then spaced the letters 2 inches apart from each other. I then moved on the “NEW” beginning again 3 inches in from the left edge and 2 inches above the “Y”. From there I spaced out the remaining letters 2 inches apart from each other and 2 inches above “YORK.”
- I then glue the letters down using a wood glue and let that dry over night.
- In order to make the piece lighter I wasn’t going to completely cover the letters in joint compound and because I was finishing it with a light colored paint I used gesso to paint over the letters and make an even base.
- The next day I used a lightweight joint compound to create the texture on the piece and the blend the letters into the canvas. I started by spreading the paste on the canvas with my hands and using by finger the cover where the letters met the canvas. Then I used a pallet night to smooth out section and create texture in other areas. I then let this dry for 24 hours.
- To finish the piece I used a metallic paint to give it a shiny finish and pearlescent feel.
- In the end it weighed a little under 12 pounds. To hang it I used 4 sets of large velcro command strips.
