applying for law school? READ THIS FIRST ‼️

to all my future juniors, from your law school jiejie 📬

in light of uni application season, ive made a post for all my potential juniors😉 if youre considering studying law, im sure youve heard from all the seniors who are currently in law school or even relatives and friends who are currently practising lawyers… nonetheless, here is yet another list of things you might want to know about law school before making up your mind! 😗

⚖️ the rigour is not at all exaggerated ⚖️

don’t let the club posts and cafe hopping stories fool you, law school’s academic rigour is insane (the students just have big brains and amazing time management 😩) despite our timetable looking rather sparse, the issue is not seemingly never-ending classes (unlike my friends in the medicine faculty) but with all that time IN BETWEEN classes that you have to spend preparing your readings, less you go to class empty-headed and leave with a ton of confusion and bewilderment 😥

⚖️ “snake” culture is subjective ⚖️

now MOST of my law school seniors warned me that law school has some of the most pretentious and snarky people (to put it nicely 🫠), but after one semester in law school, i don’t really think it’s all that obvious or bad..? i might be a little blur or naive but in my opinion, as long as you treat others nicely, they really don’t have a reason to pick a bone with you 🤞🏼 plus there are a TON of nice people, it’s a matter of the crowd you choose to surround yourself with 😋

⚖️ your tutors matter… ⚖️

i have to say that while all the professors are extremely nice and helpful, their teaching styles can vary GREATLY so there may be times where you feel like you’re not getting a lot out of your tutorials 😭 i recommend getting the notes and tutorial sheets from other classes just to buff up your notes! the more the merrier ✨

⚖️ be prepared to phantom from hall/rc ⚖️

if you don’t already know, the law campus is completely separated from the main campus (@botanic gardens 🔥) bc of that you’ll be travelling up and down from the main campus to the law campus, which takes about 30 minutes by the campus bus 🥲 coupled with night classes, you may have to forfeit certain CCAs and interest groups as youre unlikely to get to training on time/have no energy to participate/need to catch up on the next day’s readings… so most people choose to stay home and i cant say i blame them 😕

⚖️ join many orientation activities! ⚖️

before the semester started, i participated in all the orientation activities possible (at the advice of my then boss) and NO REGRETS. i made so many new friends and created so many precious memories, and bc of that i was extremely relaxed on the first official day of school since i had already formed a strong circle of friends. 🥳

regardless of how daunting law school may seem, it has its many many perks too 🤩 if you aspire to be a lawyer, don’t let the difficulty hinder you! after all, the toughness is meant to strengthen you for the even tougher career ahead of you so jiayous!! 💪🏻
