This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. I had a healthy fear of the ocean and couldn’t swim, so for six months, I took swim lessons and acclimated myself to the water.

🗓️Our trip was mid April during the Hari Raya weekend.

💡Pro-tip I learnt after: it’s actually better to dive in between full moons and new moons. Because we timed our trip to take advantage of the Raya PH, it was a new moon and this affected the tides which in turn affected the visibility in the water.

🤿 B&J Diving Centre

The vibes here was 💯and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Make sure to book early because they are quite popular and rooms can be booked out really fast.

💡Pro-tip: opt for the resort — you won’t regret it

⭐️What to expect

There’s an e-learning component which you do before your trip — don’t skip on this!!

Day 1 -3: You’ll do some shore dives or at the pool (we had a mix depending on vis that day) to clear the skills needed. These are obviously not all the skills you’ll learn but in a nutshell:

✔️ Dive Equipment Assembly

✔️ Conducting buddy checks

✔️Giant stride entry (this was fun!)

✔️How to use the different equipments and what to do when any of them fail

✔️Clearing a fully flooded mask & swimming without one

Day 4: Mini Dive!

This was so much fun and we swam through some wrecks (there’s a sunken playground we saw) and even caught sight of a shark! Definitely the highlight for me.

😿My personal challenges

I really struggled with mask clearing. During a 5-meter shore dive, fear took over, and I couldn't remove my mask. Thankfully, my instructor took me to the pool to practice after, and eventually (after many failed panicked attempts), I mastered it. Here's my biggest takeaway: go at your own pace. If something feels uncomfortable underwater, practice in a controlled environment like a pool.

and this is pretty much it. I’m definitely not an expert by far (the thought of my next dive fills me with more nervousness than excitement), but had such a blast and can’t wait for more underwater adventures.
