🎥📺 I currently work in the TV News industry & love my job! I majored in communications in college and before I entered this industry, I genuinely did not know of all the roles there are. That’s why I decided to make a list of some of the positions that are well-known and not as popular! I’m hoping this can help those in school who’re thinking about entering the industry or just anyone who is curious about how things work!

1. 🎓 ENTRY LEVEL ROLES

~ PRODUCTION ASSISTANT (PA)

• this is usually the first role most people have in the industry. when you’re a PA, you basically just help out around the station as needed. specific tasks may vary from things like running scripts to helping out in the control room. it’s a great way to figure out what you’re interested in!

~ INTERN

• like any other industry, internships are temporary. but they’re a great way to get your foot in the door! internships in this industry have specific focuses ranging from sports to digital.

2. 🎥 ON CAMERA ROLES

~ ANCHOR

• the anchor is someone who “anchors” the show live from the studio. they read all the stories and are the main face of the show.

~ REPORTER

• reporters work out in the field. they follow up on stories and report on them live during the show. sometimes a reporter will record a story beforehand to play during the show as well. and there are also specific beats for some reporters like sports, investigative, transportation, consumer alerts, etc.

3. 📺 CONTROL ROOM PRODUCTION ROLES

~ PRODUCER

• this is what I do! the producer picks out what stories go in the show and when during the show they’ll air. they pick out graphics and where the anchors will be in studio during the show. the producer also assigns stories to writers and reporters before the show. during the show, the producer times out the show from the control room. this consists of adding/removing stories to make sure the show gets off the air on time.

~ DIRECTOR

• the director uses the rundown that the producer built to code the show. coding the show allows them to automate camera movements and graphics. they also gives directions to the anchors and reporters during the show. the directors are also directly responsible for putting the show live on air.

4. 🎬 PRODUCTION ROLES

~ WRITER

• a writer is someone who gets assigned stories to research and write for the show! the producer assigns them the stories. the writer also works with the reporters while they’re live in the field. depending on the station, they will also edit simple video project for the show. in smaller tv markets, there are no writers to the producer also has to cover this role.

~ INTAKE

• this position actually has many names; acquisitions, MOC, feedback, etc. but the main purpose is all the same! the responsibility for this role is to handle the live video that’s being fed back for the show. they typically can also help out with more in depth video editing if you need!

5. 👩‍💻 DIGITAL ROLES

~ WEB WRITER

• a web writer is basically what the job title says! in this position, you focus on posting and updating the stories on the website. the web writer can also help contribute what goes on the social media accounts when it comes to which excerpts of certain stories should be used in posts.

~ SOCIAL MEDIA

• social media positions also do basically what the title says! these roles help manage the social media accounts. they clip videos from the show, make graphics, and work with the anchors and reporters to make content when needed.

6. 📞 INFORMATION GATHERING ROLES

~ ASSIGNMENT EDITOR

• the assignment editor listens to the police scanners and help chase down stories. if they hear something interesting on the scanner or posted on the fire/police dept. social media account, they call and get information. they also monitor what’s happening all around the area that day — from local and state government to protests and fundraisers — and then help decide what’s worth covering.

~ PHOTOG

• the photog (photographer) is typically paired with a reporter and films in the field for them. when not paired with a reporter, they’ll get an assignment to go and get video of.

7. ⛈️ WEATHER ROLES

~ METEOROLOGIST

• a meteorologist holds a degree in meteorology and uses that to analyze radar data to forecast weather patterns, climate trends, and severe weather events. they also display these radars on TV and build graphics to help explain them.

~ WEATHER PRESENTER

• a weather presenter (weatherman/weatherwoman) is someone who focuses more on communicating weather information to the public in a clear an enhancing matter. they can also build graphics to share information, but don’t necessarily hold a degree in meteorology.

8. 🖥️ MANAGEMENT ROLES

~ NEWS DIRECTOR

• the news director is one of the highest roles in the newsroom! they oversee all the broadcasts and typically have the final say in which stories to cover and what does and does not make it to air.

~ EXECUTIVE PRODUCER (EP)

• an executive producer is assigned to manage a certain set of shows (morning, dayside, evening). they oversee all of those shows and serve as the main point of contact for anyone who has questions. they also copy edit the scripts and help edit video when needed.
