I started doing Pilates because I thought it was a cute, girly and aesthetic way to get some movement in without sweating. Man, was I wrong - Pilates really kicked my ass.
Pilates comes in many shapes and forms: reformer, modern-reformer, chair and mat, just to name a few. From my experience, I can tell you each of them are just as effective as the other - you just gotta get your form down right and you’ll be set for a while! It’s an exercise that works your core like nothing else, and it’s so worth it.
I don’t like to work out personally. I hate lifting, running, basically anything anyone would do at a gym. I’ve always loved yoga and I’ve been too afraid to try Pilates because it seemed too intimidating, but I took a chance and never regretted it. Pilates may look pretty, but it’s a real work out. I might not be drenched in sweat, but I do break a sweat and feel the aches after each class I take, and that’s the type of workout I can get behind. That’s where my love for reformer Pilates comes from - it’s like a playground, almost not a work out if you persuade yourself enough.
There’s the myth that Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates differ so much but that’s not the truth whatsoever. I love mat because you can follow it at home on a yoga mat with bala bangles/little weights (perfect for a budget) but I also love the reformer for the vibes, even though it costs a pretty penny.
Pilates Pros:
✨You’ll feel SOO good leaving each class. Everyday, I walk out of my Pilates class, I am ACHING in the best way.
✨Your flexibility will get better with each class you take.
✨ Your stress and anxiety will reduce SIGNIFICANTLY.
✨You WILL get toned and you WILL see it the more you do Pilates. #abs #pilatesarms
✨Your bones and body will feel aligned and strong. You’ll feel the increased blood circulation through this whole body work out.
✨You’ll feel like you can breathe better.
Pilates Cons:
✨I’m not even gonna sugar coat it- Pilates can bankrupt you, it’s ridiculously expensive.
✨ It gets pretty annoying trying to find a studio and instructors you like that has the class times and availability you’re looking for. It’s tedious process to find your place - but it’s worth it.
✨ The beginner learning curve can be TOUGH - it’s hard to pick up on so many new movements and names.
Joseph Pilates once said “You’ll feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.” Man, was he right, you’ve just gotta be consistent.
