Hey lovelies! Welcome to part 9 of my one month in Japan series! My name is Rou and Iโm currently writing a series of posts for my ๐ฏ๐ต itinerary and sharings! I tend to yap a lot, so if you just want a quick summary and budget breakdown, that post is coming once this series is completed in a couple of weeksโ time.โบ๏ธ
Part 1-5 Tokyo Prefecture
Part 6-7 Yamanashi Prefecture (to see Mt. Fuji!)
Part 8 onwards - Kyoto Prefecture
After taking an overnight bus to Kyoto Station and spending the morning at Fushimi Inari Shrine, which I covered in part 8 (PS, You can save 10K yen with my transport method ๐!!), we spent the afternoon in Higashiyama District aka the old town and the place where youโll see many people wearing kimono walking about โบ๏ธ
๐
Our goal was to visit the Kiyomizudera Temple and the Yasaka Shrine, but we ended up stepping into a lot of shrines along the way! So Iโll share where we went, and you can google to read more about it before choosing to add to your itinerary. We are very chill and easy travellers, so we had the time to be flexible with our itinerary.
They were having a walking guide itinerary event, where you can choose to walk for 60,90, or 120 minutes. I attached the 120 minute map in the second picture as that was what we largely followed. Our starting point was Tofukuji Station, but you can also start from Fushimi-Inari station, just 23 mins extra walking time. We set Google maps to Kiyomizudera Temple, and started walking in the general direction of Matsubarabashi Bridge.
Oh yeah, we are crazy walkers, so yeahโฆbe prepared to clock above 20k-30k steps if you follow any of my itineraries, especially for Kyoto๐คฃ๐ซถ
๐
The list of shrines we visited within the region of Higashiyama District include (all walking distance of each other):
1. Rokuharamitu-ji Temple
2. Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine
3. Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple
4. Nittai-ji Temple (add Higashiyama Ward into Google search, else it will give you the one in Aichi Prefecture)
5. Kลdaiji Temple
6. Kiyomizudera (crazy crowded)
7. Yasaka Shrine
8. Hลkan-ji Temple (Yasaka no tล)
Some are not on the map in picture 2! So you will need to copy paste from my list into google maps to get the exact location.
If you collect Goshuin, this is a good opportunity for you to build up your collection. Some of the temple staff writing the goshuin were free to chat, and we had some insightful conversations about their work and the meaning of the various temples and shrines. Google translate was sufficient for us to understand each other!โบ๏ธ
Enjoy some of my favorite shots from picture 3-6.
๐
Picture 7 shows the one dessert we think you should try when in Higashiyama! Itโs a very cute little shop hidden in a corner called Kyo Yasaka Pudding ! We tried their most popular one called the Kyo Yasaka Pudding for ยฅ500 and it was really yummy!
๐
We had Yoshinoya for dinner near our hostel (review in next post!๐คญ) and for lunch we went on a localsโ recommendations to CAMEL - a tea shop that served really good hamburg! Do note that itโs a smoking tea shop ya, for those that may mind second hand smoke. Our lunch cost ยฅ800 and it was a set lunch. Super super worth it in our opinion๐ (Picture 8)
๐
We also spent some time in the Petter Rabbit and Studio Ghibli stores, but didnโt purchase anything from there. We did love the Goshuin books they had for sale at the Peter Rabbit store though! So if you havenโt bought a stamp book yet, you can get one there to begin your collection.
See you in part 10!๐ฉท
