I’m no stranger to taking the road less traveled to get to the hidden gem. Maybe that’s why I felt perfectly (eh, mostly) comfortable walking behind retail shops, past dumpsters, down an alley in Detroit to get to Bad Luck Bar.

I never feel cooler than when I’m walking into a speakeasy and Bad Luck Bar is magic. You’ll know you’ve found it when you see a red light and the door with a snake biting a hand painted on it. You’re let in when you call the number on the door and greeted by the most enthusiastic host who opens the curtains behind her to reveal the most beautiful bar. Every cocktail is a carefully crafted work of art delivering both something familiar, and intriguing.

Yes, Detroit is having a moment, but beyond phenomenal cocktails, I think Bad Luck Bar embodies what Detroit has ALWAYS been about: taking something unexpected and turning it into something truly incredible.
