These productivity apps saved my grades 😮💨
Back in JC, the phrase I hated hearing the most was 'study smarter, not harder', because it's so easy to say yet so difficult to achieve. If you think about it, working smart actually takes a lot more effort than working hard, as it is really not easy to find what works best for you. However, these are the 5 apps that I have experimented with during the period where I was preparing for my A Levels, and I found that they truly helped boost my productivity levels and enabled me to work smarter 🤓 and more efficiently ✨to achieve the grades I desired!
1️⃣ YPT
🕥 For: Timing my study sessions and planning my daily routine (especially helpful during the school holidays and study break periods where I had no class timetable to follow!)
📚 Aside from using this app to time my study sessions, the stats on this app have also helped me keep track of the time I spent on each subject!
📚 Enables me to monitor my productivity levels & when I work best, so that I can plan my breaks around those times
❌ Does have the tendency to promote unhealthy study habits, especially when you start obsessing over the number of hours you clock each day → Do use the timer as a tool for efficiency instead of a measure for how well you prepared for the exam!
💡 Tip: Set goals to complete each of your tasks within a set amount of time instead of aiming to hit a certain number of hours per day
2️⃣ Lemon8
🌷 For: Romanticising studying and learning from how others study!
📚 JC was super stressful but looking at aesthetic posts on Lemon8 helped me romanticise studying and learn to love life as a student 🤩
📚 There are lots of content creators on Lemon8 who post study tips & advice which I found super helpful! (do check out the study-related posts by @qeonian, @glowynotchloe and @rachtteh !)
3️⃣ Google Sheets
📄 For: Spaced repetition
📚 A little different from the usual spaced repetition method where you review topics at certain time intervals, this space repetition method I used mainly involved using one page for each subject and listing down every single topic from the subject in one column. Then, whenever I studied a particular topic, I would record down the date of that day on the next column and colour the date either 🔴red (still don't understand the topic at all), 🟡yellow (kinda understand the topic, but still rusty) or 🟢green (super confident of answering questions from this topic). I would keep studying each topic and recording down the dates, until every topic is green in colour, that's when I know I have familiarised myself with the content of the subject, and I can start doing timed practice!
📚 The method I use is explained more in detail by Ali Abdaal in THIS video
4️⃣ Notion
📂 For: Organisation & storage
📚 I mainly use this to store shortcut links for important documents such as my subject syllabus/revision packages from school!
📚 Helped me to create a more organised digital space for myself since a lot of my resources for JC are online. I find that when my resources are organised, my brain feels neat and organised too 😌
5️⃣ Quizlet
🧠 For: Memorisation
📚 Super helpful for memorising definitions!
📚 Having digital flashcards instead of physical ones allowed me to review them easily on the way to school or on the go
These are the 5 apps that have helped me the most! Preparing for the A Levels is certainly stressful, but using your devices to your advantage can make your study sessions a lot more efficient and enjoyable!
