Oregon State University was home for about 4 months (Sept - Dec) last year 🇺🇸
— Some things I wish I knew —
• Bring singapore/asian food items to cook (eg maggie, milo, curry powder etc)
• Maggie/ microwavable food were so helpful for bad days like if you’re super tired/ it’s too cold outside / sick. So good to have at least a few.
• Splitwise was super helpful to split spending among friends
• Bring staple medications (I got covid and almost didn’t survive without my cough syrup)
• Don’t leave your stuff in the car even if it’s for awhile 😭 Had friends who got their stuff stolen :’) Do split the cash you have and keep in different bags incase this happens. Also, I did print my passport & visa and kept copies in different bags incase it goes missing.
• Don’t pack too many clothes (Especially if you intend to buy clothes there :’))
• FOR USA: You probably can share 1 meal between 2 people. The portions are huge.
• If you intend to travel to other states by plane do bring a duffel bag (in the size of personal item bag). Airlines like Frontier will charge for carry-on so do check their website!
• Air-tag if you’re scared your luggage goes missing especially when taking domestic flights.
• (Also this is just cuz i was blur) if u’re going exchange in the second half of the year to the US:
It’s quite warm in the day up till mid September so do bring summer clothes and warmer clothes for night time! I didn’t know and brought all warm clothes :’) Only speaking for the west coast though (i.e. California, Oregon etc). On this note, if you don’t have any winter wear, I think buying one at the outlet malls is not bad as it’s usually cheaper (at least from what I saw).
• People might not understand what you say since you have a different accent even if you’re speaking in english. So speak slower.
• Also Oregon is tax free
• Be prepared to part with some stuff (Many of my friends and I had to throw things away because our luggage was too heavy)
• Post-exchange depression 🥺 All good things has to come to an end 🤓
Hope this helps someone :”)
