I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki by Baek Sehee — a short self-help x memoir of the author’s most real and heartfelt therapist sessions with her psychiatrist over a few months. 🗣️

Mental Health is a broad topic where varying perspectives, opinions and experiences exist. I must say I’m not an expert on this topic but this is my honest opinion from reading both books! Feel free to comment what are your thoughts/views as well! 🥹

I read the first book last year, and the second book just last week! With an interest in mental health and other issues discussed (for example: low self-esteem; the constant thoughts that others have of you, etc), these books gave an insight into the mind of one who suffers from depression, anxiety, and dysthymia.

I enjoyed most parts of the book as the word choice seems pretty blunt straightforward and raw. I’m glad that we’re able to visit certain sensitive topics directly (since Mental health is a sensitive topic where there’s always a stigma added to it).

What I could relate to, and I’m sure many of us do:

is that she yearns for validation, comparing herself to others and always worries about the future. Every chapter introduces a new struggle the author faced and how the therapist helped the author to look from other perspectives, figure out why the author feels this way and many more. Every chapter also ends with a mini self-reflection the author has — showing her growth in this journey. I felt like I went through free therapy sessions as her therapist gave great re-direction to her concerns and I was intrigued by their conversations.

I admire her courage to publish her therapy sessions to everyone and I thank her honesty about her life and feelings in both books — the second book was recently released, so do check it out!

Overall, I would rate these books:

1. I want to die but I want to eat Tteokbokki: 4/5 stars

2. I want to die but I still want to eat Tteokbokki: 3.5/5 stars

If you read until here, thank you for sticking by and supporting my book reviews 🫶🏻😀 Happy Monday everybody!
