Little Hong Kong in Borneo

The streets here are narrow, flanked by old, closely packed buildings that aren't very tall but still give off a slightly oppressive vibe when you look up—just like the scenes often seen in old Hong Kong movies. This place has the classic Hong Kong-style architecture, the Cantonese dialect, and remnants of the culture left behind by Hong Kongers of the past… but these are just part of what makes up Sandakan.

Beyond the Hong Kong influence, this port city is also famous for its seafood, unique local delicacies, rare ecological reserves, and historic religious sites, among other things.

Sandakan is a little Hong Kong, but it's also more than just that.

Of course, I only spent a few days exploring the city, so there's still much more to discover next time.
