During our Taiwan trip, we decided to go on a round island road trip and it was the best trip we had!

Here are some benefits of driving during our Taiwan trip

1. Access to more remote places - with a car, you get to explore more outside the main cities of Taipei and access less touristy places (like this farm with grass sledding and slam dunk railroad crossing) and restaurants (such as this cheap sashimi place).

2. Stop anywhere you want - one of our more memorable pit stops was at this farmer’s exhibition where they created huge structures using dried grass.

3. Flexible itinerary - you can leave any time you want and do not need to be restricted to public bus timing. It can be up to an hour for places like Yangmingshan and Taroko (check out our day trip to Yangmingshan, overnight trip to Cingjing and Taroko Gorge day trip).

How to rent a car

1. Book your car rental via Klook or directly with the company (we booked with ezche as it was cheaper. You may need to liaise with them via Line to discuss further details.

2. Purchase car rental insurance as most rental companies in Taiwan do not provide insurance and will require you to buy one. Strongly recommend adding on car insurance via your travel insurance for peace of mind.

3. Arrive at the location on the designated day and time to collect your car.

4. Show them proof of your driving license, international driving licence and insurance purchase.

5. Pay the deposit either in cash or card and sign the contract.

6. Perform a check together to ensure all is in order. Feel free to take photos or a video to avoid any disputes when you return.

7. Collect your car and enjoy your road trip!

Returning the car

1. Before returning the car, remember to pay all parking fees (the manual ones) and fill up the petrol.

2. Arrive on time to return the car for inspection.

3. Pay toll fees to the company either in cash or card.

4. The car rental company may ask for your credit card details if not already provided to deduct any amounts if you commit any traffic offences. It may take up to a month to receive them.

5. Sign the hand over form and you are done!
