Okay so remember how a week ago i talked about taking my first ever Malay exam? If you missed it, you can check it out here:
Jet Trys: Taking a Malay Exam (first time ever) 📝
Well, i just got back my results so in the name of full transparency, here are my results after about 1.5 months of Malay learning 🙀
1️⃣ Written Quiz (15% of overall grade)
I got 66/100 points which is 9.9%/15% which actually is decent but i was rly upset at myself bc i made SO MANY careless mistakes such as spelling mistakes (i wrote hari diasa instead of hari biasa 😭), swapping letters (i wrote kari instead of kira but i knew its kira not kari 😢) or forgetting word order (i keep putting adjectives after nouns) UGH its frustrating bc i studied rly hard for it but the stress and nerves rly got the best of me.
2️⃣ Oral (15% of overall grade) 🗣
So oral was split into 2 sections - reading and conversation:
Reading was easy, i got 17/20. The teacher remarked that my pronunciation and was accurate and natural, and my speed was good but noted that the flow was a bit choppy.
Conversation (which is so much tougher) was even better 🥳 i got 27/30
So my overall score is 44/50 which is 13.2%/15% which is so great, im super proud of myself 🥹 However, i also did make some mistakes such as pronouncing contoh as kon-toh instead of chon-toh ARGHHH and i also mispronounced kerana as kerena but oh well! Now i have internalised these mistakes and intend to improve from here on out 😁
3️⃣ My reflections 🪞
To be real with yall, i’ve always been rly rly hard on myself, especially academically and so, i was a little disappointed in my written quiz results at first especially bc i knew i could have done better if i was more careful. However, i think what i need to learn is how to detach and how to treat myself with more gentleness 💛 As my friend put it, im learning a language for the first time and i have little prior knowledge, kids take years before they get anywhere near fluent in a language, and actually if i add up both components its abt 24%/30% so being able to score this amount is already an accomplishment and a testament to my abilities :”)
