Why I’m quitting my job as a Teaching assistant

I have worked at a public elementary school for four years. This job was the first time I’ve felt passionate about a job. I truly love the students and seeing their growth, but that’s it. Unfortunately, it’s not enough any more. I work 32.5 hours a week maximum, and get paid bi-weekly a check of $800. While many people find the breaks and holidays an appealing part of the job, classified staff suffers because we don’t get paid. During the school year we go about 5 weeks without getting paid. We don’t get sick time, and are encouraged to come in to work even if we’re sick.

As for lack of support, we are made to deal with behaviors even if we are put in harms way. We are not allowed to work overtime, or even work up to 40 hours a week.

Unfortunately, there is also a lot of drama, and I don’t feel comfortable with my admin to discuss it with them. Lastly, we are encouraged to go above and beyond at our work place but get no recognition. Long story short, it’s an unsustainable job that lets us know that we are unwanted.
