Hey there zesties! 🍋

Let’s talk about irregular periods today! I feel like this is a topic that has not been discussed enough, but its something that’s close to home and I’ve only managed to be at peace with rather recently. Rather than talking about remedies and what not, let me just share my experience and journey to acceptance.

When I was younger, I used to dislike eating rice, constantly swapping it out for bread and noodles (i know what a disgrace to my asian roots). I was also a rather sporty person who does vigorous exercises at least 3-4x a week. from my teens to my early 20s (21-22 y/o), I’ve always had irregular periods. I can have 1-2 months without having periods to having it two times a week. The flow also varied. The period can also last from anything between 10-14 days. Which sucked because everyone around me tells me that their period is usually 3-5 days, while i’m stuck here having to wear a pad for like close to 2 weeks. I never really had any symptoms too so I can never predict when my period is coming, so then I can never really prepare for it either. It's like my body's playing a game of hide and seek, and i’m left in the dark praying that I dont stain my pants when I’m out. iykyk.

My struggles

I used to feel really guilty when I realised my cycle didn’t align with what I was taught in school. I really wondered if there was something wrong with my body or perhaps my fertility in the future cause my teacher said like irregular periods was a sign off fertility issues. What’s worse was my mom being really concerned about my period and trying to bring me to the TCM to “fix my body” which obviously made me worry even more.

Sudden realisation

But, here's the thing. Our bodies are unique. *REPEAT AFTER ME. OUR BODIES ARE UNIQUE SIS.* Regular irregularities are a thing. You can have a cycle that stretches beyond the conventional 30 days and still be perfectly fine. I realised that after countless tracking my period using the flo app. Like you can have a regular 40-50 day cycle (not period ah, but cycle including the ovulation phase etc). And that’s okay. There is nothing wrong with you and I realise that having regular irregular cycle is honestly not normalised enough. We are taught to think that only a 30 day cycle is normal when we fail to consider the unique differences each person faces.

Acceptance

But all in all, it also helps to have a healthy lifestyle. Eating sufficiently is a key factor in doing so. No more fearing carbs or replacing them; my body needed nutrients that rice has to offer. Your body deserves that bowl of rice daily. It actually helped get my cycles to be a little more predictable. Of course tracking also did wonders.

here's the bottom line: irregular periods are just a quirk of the marvelous creation that is your body. It doesn't define you, and it doesn't dictate your future. banish the guilt and embrace the fact that "normal" varies for each of us. Celebrate regular irregularities and prioritise your well-being. honestly, thrive by simply doing you
