This week, I finished two gripping books back to back: What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher and Ward D by Frederico Axat. Both stories are eerie, unsettling, and kept me glued to the page.

What Moves the Dead is a masterful retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic story, The Fall of the House of Usher. Kingfisher captures the gothic atmosphere perfectly, but adds an intriguing, creepy twist that makes the novel feel fresh. The slow unraveling of the strange happenings in the Usher household is so immersive that I found myself as captivated by the haunting setting as the characters themselves. The imagery is dark, visceral, and leaves a lasting impression. If you’re a fan of horror that messes with your mind while creeping under your skin, this is a must-read. Also if you played The Last of Us and/or watched the series, you’ll definitely be a fan of this story’s similarity!

Immediately after, I picked up Ward D by Frieda McFadden, a psychological thriller that kept me on edge from start to finish. The story centers around a night shift at a psychiatric ward, where our protagonist faces mysterious occurrences that blur the line between reality and delusion. McFadden masterfully builds suspense, using the claustrophobic setting of the ward to heighten the sense of dread. The characters are well-drawn, and the constant sense of unease made it impossible to put down. It’s the kind of book that keeps you guessing until the very end. There’s a lot of mixed reviews about this book specifically which I don’t see how!

Reading these two books back to back was an intense, thrilling experience. Both stories offered deeply immersive worlds, one drenched in gothic decay and the other in psychological suspense. If you’re looking for unsettling tales that keep you turning pages, I highly recommend both What Moves the Dead and Ward D. #bookreadratedandreviewed #amazonunlimited #goodreadssearch
