Hello Zesties 🍋! This post is a review of a module I took to fulfill my GER-PE(LA) requirement as an Accountancy student from NTU. This module, HV5001 Introduction to Environmental Humanities is offered as a GER-PE(LA) and BDE, and was only offered in Semester 1 when I took it last year, though I am not sure if there have been any changes.

I will #RateThis module 8️⃣/🔟 because I feel that it is interesting with just the right depth of content, making it easy to follow along as the weeks go by (it is an introductory module after all). The Professor, Prof Chu Kiu-Wai is approachable and knowledgeable also. However, the workload can be heavy with deliverables like 6 eco-journals and 2 quizzes throughout the semester, coupled with a group poster plus video and an individual essay due at the end of the semester.

HV5001 is not just a module discussing eco-friendly practices and sustainability that I and I’m sure many others already know. HV5001 also introduces topics and ideas that are not commonly discussed among many non-humanities students such as ecofeminism, ecomedia, environmental injustice etc. It mainly showcases the intricate relationship and interactions between human 👩🏻👨🏻 and the non-human 🐱 species in our environment 🌍. Personally, I have not been exposed to many of such topics as an Acountancy student so it was truly an eye-opening experience to be able to learn about them.

Don’t worry 🤝🏼, these Environmental Humanities (EH) concepts are not hard to follow along, the Professor explains them really well through elaborate examples and videos. Lectures are honestly very fun, we watch as little as 2 videos per lecture, as many as 15 videos per lecture IIRC. Some of these videos are viral videos, movie trailers or snippets of documentaries and movies that will make film enthusiasts squeal in their seats 😆. For me, I enjoyed having show recommendations every week. NGL I have watched a few of the films the Professor used as in-class examples and it was fun putting my EH lens to watch these shows, because otherwise I will just be watching the plot for entertainment.

I am not sure if there will be any changes, but when I took HV5001 the last time it was offered, there were eco-journals due every few weeks. Having to submit 6 eco-journals across the semester felt a bit tiring because eco-journals are always at the back of my head as after I submit 1, another 1 will be due in 2-3 weeks time 😵‍💫. Thank goodness eco-journals are like mini reflections on a given EH topic, so it was not that tough. I remember 1 interesting one where we had to analyse an MV with our EH lens on HAHA fun times.

‼️ I will recommend this module to anyone who doesn’t abhor doing research online and through reading books in the library. #BeReal there will be quite a lot of research to be done for the final essay and group assignment. In addition, since the module is delivered through lectures, if you’re someone who dislike seminars with class participation component, you just want to commit to a somewhat chill 3 hour weekly lecture, do consider HV5001!

I also took another module taught by Prof Chu - HC5010 Animals in Chinese Culture that I enjoyed and will recommend to everyone! I have also posted reviews of other electives that I have taken in NTU such as LT5001 Thai Language Level 1 and HH3040 History of Chinese Medicine do read them if you’re interested in these modules and feel free to ask questions, I am happy to answer them ☺️.
