What I wish I’d known before Getting a Swissy

I was new to this breed 3 years ago but have fallen in love with my big gentle giant. There are a few things I wish I’d known before getting a Swissy though.

1. They make themselves *very* comfortable if you let them. Our couch is his couch. We buy covers on Amazon. He sheds. Omg he sheds so much. Get a great vacuum.

2. They are a working dog breed. Swissy’s were bred to pull carts and sleds in Switzerland, consequently they PULL on a leash if not trained well. They are so strong and can easily take you for the walk instead of the other way around. Higgs loves his backpack as it gives him a job.

3. They are friends to all. My dog is so friendly we joke that he is running for office with the way he makes a point to greet every dog and human he comes into contact with. He is gentle and sweet with dogs big and small, but he does love a good chase session.

4. They are “Velcro dogs” as they are constantly by your side. They love human interaction, I swear he thinks he is human sometimes. I find myself constantly stepping over him in the kitchen while I cook.

5. They do best with a best friend. We originally did not want 2 dogs, but our big guy was so good with other dogs and loved interaction so much we got him a Labrador retriever as a best friend/brother.
