“you’ll have lots of fun in uni”, “uni quite chill one, play hard study hard”

not sure if you guys heard the same comments from your seniors or family but i certainly did and i must say uni is SO DIFFERENT from what i’ve heard as an eighteen year old. adulting is tough and here are some things i wished someone told me before i entered uni so i can manage my expectations better🥹

1. PEOPLE YOU HANG OUT WITH👭

as cliche as it sounds, it is true that who you hang out with really plays an important role in how your uni life will be. i found that in modules where i have friends who are driven and hardworking, i would also tend to develop such traits and listen attentively in class. however, in modules where i have friends who are more laid-back and chill who skip classes regularly, i found myself lacking motivation to pay attention. this made me realise “damn, who i hang out with really shapes what kind of a student i am” thankfully, i have a group of friends who are fun to be around with yet hardworking so i really enjoy spending time after class with them to study and have meals. your group of friends really make or break your time in uni!!!

1. IT’S NORMAL TO FEEL LONELY😔

i learnt that growing up can be a lonely process and while you might feel lonely at times, i want to remind you that EVERYONE IS GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING and that you are not going through these alone. in the past, i found it extremely difficult to eat alone and i would do anything just to avoid that. however, after entering uni, with the amount of work piling up, i start getting a little exhausted and realise that i sometimes find joy in being by myself. PLUS it is likely that you have different classmates for each module so it is tough to find someone with the exact same timetable as you! that also means that you’d need to spend some time yourself and THAT’S ALRIGHT! it might be intimidating at first but IT GETS BETTER

1. REALLY, STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE🫣

it’s the last time you get to be in a school setting and also the last time you’d get to try new things in a protected, safe environment. initially, i was afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try things i always wanted but i eventually convinced myself that “if not now, when” AND IT IS THE BEST DECISION I’VE EVER MADE. not only did i feel super accomplished, i also got to make so many good friends through these experience!! it really gets better once you try and if you don’t try, you’d never know when you will get such an opportunity again.

lastly, remember that your mental health come first and take your time to figure out how this whole uni-thing works! if you’re struggling with school or anything, feel free to drop me a message i’ll be more than willing to lend you a listening ear <3 jiayousss❤️
