Japanese skincare seems to be quite overshadowed by Korean/American skincare. The thought of visiting Welcia gives me a headache because I’ve no idea what to look out for 🤯 This changed on my recent trip to Japan where I uncovered some solid finds!

TLDR: Anessa and Suisai now form a core part of my routine, read on to find out why 👀

1) Anessa sunscreen milk

Despite this being highly spoken of, I never actually picked it up till my recent trip. For an oily skin girlie, I ask myself why haven’t I tried this sooner! I’ve tried multiple sunscreens so far - COSRX, La Roche Posay, Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab, etc. These sunscreens leave me feeling like a greaseball at the end of the day. Anessa has a very matte finish that stays that way till EOD, which I really appreciate. That said, it leaves a slight white cast but I can accept that in exchange of matte and oil-minimised skin.

Rating: 4.5/5 (minus points for slight white cast)

2) Suisai beauty clear powder

This packaging piqued my interest - they came in little “tubs” and the content comes in powder form where you mix with water. At first glance I was skeptical, thinking to myself, that’s kind of extra?! But I decided to try because this was rated as the bestseller in every drugstore I went to. I was thoroughly amazed, my skin felt EXTRA smooth after using it almost like I just went for facial. I bought several packets back to SG and it’s now a core part of my routine.

Rating: 4.5/5 (minus points for price)

3) Baking soda face wash

For the price point, this worked like a pretty regular face wash. Would not particularly recommend it nor discourage anyone from buying it. It does leave my face feeling squeaky clean after use though. They have several variations and I suspect the physical exfoliator version (the scrub) would’ve been a bigger hit.

Rating: 3.5/5

4) Obagi Vitamin C

This was a super hit product in the drugstores too, alongside Melano CC (tho much cheaper). I’ve tried Melano and it did not do anything for my skin, which made me curious about this. I saw a difference in my acne scars after using it almost everyday for a couple of weeks, and best of all it was really gentle with my skin which was a major plus point! Though that said, it was quite expensive - probably cheaper vit Cs exist out there for what it offers.

Rating: 4/5
