Hey, there! I am Leilah, a 21-year-old college student and part-time freelancer. I have been freelancing in the design and marketing space for over 2 years now! Freelancing has helped me pay for bills, college, gas, groceries, and more. It’s a great job to have to work with a college schedule!

I have tried numerous platforms when freelancing, so here are my reviews of each one.

Upwork – great for beginners

4.5 stars

Upwork is where I got started. There are some scams that you need to watch out for, but when you get a legit job, it’s amazing! You can set your pay, hours, and select jobs you are interested in. Companies will post a job listing on Upwork, then you can apply. They can also invite you to apply, too. You can even set up projects that companies can inquire about.

Fiverr – great for beginners

4 stars

I used Fiverr shortly after Upwork. You set up projects, then buyers can buy from you. You do not apply to jobs like you do on Upwork. Some months are great, some months are bad. It’s great if you are looking for one-off jobs, but Upwork is where you can find more consistent jobs.

Pangea.App – great for experts

4 stars

Pangea.App used to be a platform for students and I loved it with my whole heart. Now, they are tapping into the “expert” market instead of beginners, like college students. I actually used to work for Pangea to help with monitoring their community pages, the team is amazing! So, if you have some experience in freelancing or corporate America, this is a great platform for you. I think they have the most unique brands to apply to! The pay is great, as well.

Home From College – great for beginners

3.75 stars

I really do like this platform. I think it is amazing for college students! The pay is already set and you apply to jobs there made by companies. There are not too many jobs, but there is a lot of competition which is why I knocked some stars off in my rating. I have only landed 1 job on the platform since I knew about it earlier this year. It is great for beginners, if you can land a job. There are some UGC, brand ambassador, and event hosting listings posted often!

Contra – great for experts

Haven’t used enough to rate

Contra is definitely the prettiest freelancing platform out there. I love their portfolio options. However, I feel like there are never enough jobs there for me to consider even putting time into making a great portfolio. I could be using the platform wrong or just not being consistent enough, but I am willing to give it another try soon.
