If you’re like me and you love interior design but can’t justify the price of certain elevated pieces... this DIY is for you!

I have been loving the look of textured art pieces, but always liked something more abstract than the plain white, spackle art that I see all over TikTok. So I did it myself.

Materials:

Canvas of your size preference (I chose 30x40 for a good sized piece of art) Spackling paste

Spackle tool

Paint (I just used black) and paintbrush

Sheet or something to avoid a mess!

For the look that I wanted to achieve, I decided to do an outside layer of spackle first. This is because I wanted to paint the border black so that it would pop on the wall. To do this, scoop the spackle and apply it in straight motions, trying to thin out the spackle as much as possible along the outside edges.

Once the spackle was dry enough to paint, I went over it with black paint.

The next step is revised because I made a mistake. Make sure the spackle is COMPLETELY dry before trying to add a second layer. To ensure this, you may want to wait until the spackle is dry before painting.

Once the paint and first layer of spackle is dry, scoop and apply more spackle in an abstract manner all over the canvas— I achieved this abstract look by moving the tool in vertical and horizontal patterns (not uniform) and adding the occasional randomly placed swoop. I partially covered the border in this process to create an overlapping effect. I use the spackle tool to scoop and apply the spackle in an abstract way.

After the second layer dried, I took a bottle of paint and dripped it all over the canvas! I tried to create some circular motions but I basically just eyeballed it until I liked the way it looked!

I love how this turned out and I can’t wait to hang it in my apartment! This was such a create way to achieve an elevated abstract look for less!
