My Work Day As A Civil Engineer

Today I got tasked with inspecting a storm sewer outfall to a creek. Another engineer in my office is designing a new storm sewer system and it needs to connect to the existing storm sewer. The televising video that was done by the city didn’t show the outfall pipe and it was important to the design part. He asked us to go out and we did.

An outfall is a pipe section that discharges clean rain water runoff from streets to a nearby creek, river or a pond. The location of this outfall was at the bottom of a hill at a creek that leads to Lake Michigan.

My coworker and I went down to the manhole structure and took photos of the area. Our photos included the cover, frame, aerial location, and topside. We also brought our camera and lowered it down into the manhole to get a 360° photo and video of the inside. We also recorded the pipe material, diameter and height of the outfall pipe.

This type of outfall work with storm sewer is something I typically don’t do, as I actually work more on the sanitary sewer side, but it was fun going out and helping another coworker in my company. (Although it is the neighboring field) I love learning new things everyday
