I Switched from iPhone 14 Plus to iPhone 16 Pro: Was It Worth It?

When I bought my iPhone 14 Plus in December 2022, it was everything I needed – a big 6.7-inch display, 256GB of storage (no need for anything bigger since I heavily rely on iCloud), and a price tag of around $1,669. I didn’t go for the Pro model back then because I didn’t see the need. I was pleased with the performance, and the A15 Bionic chip worked well for my daily tasks and content creation. However, after nearly two years of using it, the size started to feel a bit too much. I wanted something smaller and more compact. That’s when I decided to switch to the iPhone 16 Pro, which is 6.3 inches and weighs 199g – a significant change from the 14 Plus’s 203g and larger size.

Size and Weight

One of the main reasons for my switch was the form factor. While the iPhone 14 Plus's large screen was great for watching videos and working on the go, it was starting to feel bulky. The iPhone 16 Pro, with its 6.3-inch screen, is the perfect size for me – not too big, not too small. The weight difference may not seem like much on paper (203g vs. 199g), but in hand, it feels more manageable and comfortable to use daily.

Performance: A15 vs A18 Pro Chip

The iPhone 14 Plus runs on the A15 Bionic chip, which has been solid for general use, gaming, and content creation. But the iPhone 16 Pro comes with the new A18 Pro chip, which promises faster performance and better efficiency. While I haven’t had any lagging issues with the 14 Plus, I can definitely feel the speed bump with the 16 Pro. Apps load faster, and editing videos for my content creation projects has become smoother. However, it’s still early days, and the real game-changer, Apple Intelligence, hasn’t fully rolled out yet. That’s something we’ll have to wait and see, as it could either enhance the iPhone 16’s potential or reveal some flaws that haven’t surfaced yet.

Camera: A Major Leap

One of the most significant upgrades is the camera. The iPhone 14 Plus has a 12MP camera, which has served me well for casual shots and social media content. But the iPhone 16 Pro’s 48MP camera is a huge leap. The clarity, depth, and details in my photos are noticeably better. Whether I’m shooting in low light or outdoors, the difference in image quality is undeniable. However, if you’re upgrading from a recent Pro model, like the iPhone 15 Pro, the jump in camera quality might not feel as drastic.

Display and Design

The Retina display on the iPhone 16 Pro is another standout feature. The colors are more vibrant, and the contrast is sharper compared to the 14 Plus. Watching videos, editing photos, and just scrolling through social media feels more immersive. Plus, the 16 Pro comes with a beautiful matte glass back, which I absolutely love. The 14 Plus has a glass back that’s fine, but the matte finish on the 16 Pro feels more premium and less prone to fingerprints. I opted for the natural titanium color, which gives it a sleek, professional look. I wasn’t a fan of the desert titanium option, so I stuck with something classic.

Price and Value

The iPhone 16 Pro is priced at $1,799 for the 256GB model, which is a bit of a jump from the 14 Plus’s original price. However, I managed to score a $50 discount at Switch+ Singapore by using GrabPay, so that was a nice little bonus. Even with the price difference, I feel like the upgrade was worth it for me, especially with the better camera, faster chip, and more portable size.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth the Switch?

If you’re coming from an iPhone 14 Plus like me, the switch to the iPhone 16 Pro is definitely worth considering, especially if you’re looking for a more compact device with improved performance and camera quality. The A18 Pro chip and 48MP camera are big upgrades, and the size makes it more comfortable for daily use. However, with Apple Intelligence yet to fully roll out, it’s hard to say just how much of an impact that will have on the overall experience – it could be a game-changer or introduce unexpected quirks.

For now, I’m happy with the upgrade. The iPhone 16 Pro feels like a solid, well-rounded choice for both work and content creation. But if you’re someone who’s hesitant about making the leap, it might be worth waiting a bit longer to see how the new Apple Intelligence affects these models.
