As a sonography student, it’s important to understand basic ultrasound terms that help interpret images accurately. Terms like anechoic, hypoechoic, and hyperechoic describe how structures appear on the screen. Anechoic means the structure is fluid-filled and appears black, while hypoechoic structures are darker, reflecting fewer echoes, and hyperechoic structures are brighter, reflecting more sound waves. These distinctions are key in identifying tissue types and abnormalities.

Knowing the difference between cystic (fluid-filled), solid (dense), and complex (a mix of both) structures is also essential in making diagnostic assessments. Additionally, understanding terms like homogeneous (consistent echo pattern) and heterogeneous (irregular echo pattern) helps identify normal versus abnormal tissues.

Mastering the scan planes—transverse, sagittal, and coronal—ensures you can orient and capture accurate images. Basic anatomy knowledge is crucial too, as it allows you to quickly identify organs and structures during exams. Together, these terms and concepts form the foundation for becoming a successful sonographer.
