have a gamer boyfriend, read this!

Disclaimer first, I am not a gamer girl, and I don’t play any online games at all. I’m really bad at it, but I got myself a pro-gamer boyfriend. I guess no matter who you date, they gotta be something that they invest their time and energy into, you gotta work the relationship out in different ways, but hopefully here’s some tips to those whos dating/might be dating a gamer boyfriend.

1. Compromising

Compromising is a big word I would say, you’ll always need to compromise things to achieve the balance in a relationship. For my case, he always have his practice/competition during his free time (when his not in camp), but that is also the only time we get to spend together. When he has to practice or when he is playing his competition, I’ll usually sit beside his table and watch his game on streaming platforms and do my own work. Once he’s done, we’ll then either stay home and have dinner or we’ll go for a short date. There are times where only the first half happens, which is during the competition period, but after that peak period, he will make it up to me by going on dates.

2. Communication

It is never easy to be supportive throughout our relationship especially when there are times I felt neglected when he needs to focus more on his gaming career. It is not wrong to feel anything, but be sure to talk it out with one another, always communicate what is on your mind, instead of letting him to guess what you’re feeling or angry about then you both can find a way to work things out.

3. Supportive

I have 0 knowledge and experience when it comes to gaming, I can’t play any of the games as well. I tried and I’m super bad at it, feels bad for people who are on the same team with me 🫠 but i spend time watching his game play, understanding how the games work and I’m proud to say that I can sound like I play alot of Valorant now 😂 not just being supportive in trying to know what is going on, so we have more topics to talk about, I also make time to be there when he is playing for competition. Most of his competitions were during covid period so they were all mainly online, so I will always watch his game through streaming platforms, even when I am working I try to catch his games when I’m on my meal breaks. I been to two of his LAN tournaments as well, it was pretty awkward because I don’t know anyone there so I just watch it alone, and cheer inside my heart 😂

You don’t always have to force yourself to play the same game or have the same interests, but don’t stop your other half from having his own hobbies. We are all different and it is always nice to see one having the drive and passion to do what they like. It is not easy to pursue dreams, especially Esports in Singapore when it is still not well recognised, so don’t be the one stopping him from living his dream but be there with him through the journey 🤍
