The Maybank Family and Friend’s Card is a must have if you frequent JB at least once a month. You’ll get 8% cashback for spend on petrol, massage, groceries, movies, dining, AND any Ringgit spend.
(Actual Cashback is about 5% if you spend on Ringgit due to the banks’s foreign exchange fees - which still isn’t bad!)
Here’s the fine print.
You can choose 5 categories from a list of 10 options to be eligible for the cashback when you spend.
1) Dining (restaurants but no fast food)
2) Transport (includes petrol, public transport)
3) Groceries
4) Beauty & Wellness (includes spa and massages)
5) Entertainment (includes cinema tickets)
6) Data Communications & TV Streaming (telcos, netflix, etc)
7) Kids Retail & Pets
8) Online Fashion
9) Sports & Sports Apparels
10) Pharmacy
Bonus category: any Ringgit spend
This will be automatically allocated to the Card Member, in addition to the 5 categories.
Each category has a cap of $25 cashback you can earn each month. Meaning you can spend roughly $300 monthly per category. Anything more will get you a mere 0.3% cashback
The last thing you need to know is you need to meet a minimum of $800 spend each calendar month to be eligible for the 8% cashback.
Here’s how I’d maximise the cashback:
Categories I’d select:
1) Transport
I drive and top up petrol in JB whenever I’m there
2) Data Communications & TV Streaming
I’ll put my phone bills and netflix on recurring billing
3) Dining
Other than lokloks, we visit restaurants in JB too
4) Groceries
I’d imagine most of us doing groceries if we’re in JB
5) Beauty & Wellness
Foot reflexology, spas, massages
The spends can be in Singapore as well, but I feel this card is best suited for Singaporeans frequenting JB. There would be other credit cards for local spend with better value than 8% cashback in my opinion
Do note if the spends are in Ringgit, the nett cashback you get is about 5% due to the banks foreign exchange fee (which is about 3%)
The other good thing that I like is that there is an app which tracks the spend every month for each category. So you can easily check how much you’re lacking or if you’ve already met the minimum spend.
