MAKE YOUR ROOM UNIQUE ⭐️

i’ve always wanted a room that reflected my personality and who i am — so i really wanted to set up a display on my shelf that would add some character to my room. however, i didn’t just wanna buy new display items for the sake of making my room aesthetic & wanted to try as much as possible to repurpose the items that i’ve collected over the years!!!

WHAT’S ON MY SHELF

since the shelf has 4 compartments, i could decorate each compartment differently! as u can see, i used a lot of items that i already owned — e.g. perfume, glass bottles from cafes, necklaces, plush toys! 🕯️ it’s not perfect n i still wanna change it around a bit, but i thought i’d share what i’ve done so far!

🎧 don’t buy generic display items, display things you really like/that mean something to you!

it’s super easy to get caught up in wanting ur room to look like it’s from a pinterest board. but if you mindlessly buy trending furniture and items just to make your room look conventionally aesthetic, you’ll realise that you want to change your room once there’s another interior design trend.

don’t unnecessarily buy things that are in trend! you’ll find your room much more unique if you display things that you already own/have collected over the years!

e.g the “ash princess” book from my shelf was a bday gift from my friends (because my name is ashley HAHAHA) and the “blan bunny’s tea book” was actually a box containing tea leaves that i got from suzhou in 2017!

the bottles are from when i visited a cafe called curious palette last year — it’s a good idea to keep and collect items (bottles, boxes etc) that you find pretty so u can use them for decoration!

you’ll probably find items in your room that you can repurpose. displaying items that are functional are a good idea bc then you’ll be able to access them easily!

some items you can display:

perfume bottles, accessories, bags, shoes, books, notebooks, keychains, soft toys etc.

🎧 don’t use too many colours —

i tried to stick to neutral colours + blue/green/orange/yellow! i have a lot of other soft toys, perfumes etc but i didn’t display those that didn’t match the colour scheme.

🎧 divide into segments

since there were 4 compartments, i decided to segment them with 2 meant more for functional use and 2 meant more for display. try not placing chunky/big items with each other!

🎧 buy simple-looking storage — avoid patterns!

especially if the items you’re displaying are brighter and of many different colours, you probably want to keep the rest of your room simple so the display can really stand out. avoid storage boxes with patterns on them because they might end up making the space look too cluttered 😵‍💫

🎧 displays aren’t limited to shelves

try decorating your floor too! a rug can really help to spice things up. i tufted mine at a rug tufting studio — which is a super great experience (just doesn’t come very cheap LOL)
