When it comes to creating a modern wabi-sabi inspired home, there are several key elements that I believe are essential to achieving that perfect blend of simplicity, inviting warmth, soft lighting, and the restful place we call home.

1. Natural Materials:

Wabi-sabi is all about embracing natural elements, so incorporating materials like wood, stone, and clay is crucial. Hence I opted for raw, unpolished surfaces (light), laminates with visible wood grain, and sintered stone countertops with unique textures.

2. Muted Color Palette:

Stick to soft, earthy tones that reflect the natural environment. I chose shades of beige and gray to create a calming atmosphere and highlight the beauty of the materials I’ve selected. The intention is to let the space breathe and to avoid an overwhelming look—a key point for a restful ambiance.

3. Minimalist Approach:

Less is more. A wabi-sabi home isn’t cluttered; it’s curated. Each piece should have a purpose, should be functional or simply brings joy. This means picking out decor carefully, keeping things spacious, and creating a peaceful vibe overall. We built extra storage in the living room and kitchen, keeping in mind not to overdo it and make our living space feel cramped. The goal is to keep our place clutter-free and well-kept.

4. Connection with Nature:

Bringing nature into the home helps create a grounded feel and fits perfectly with the wabi-sabi idea of living in harmony with the natural world. So, we went plant hunting to find ones that vibe with our home, including a bonsai and an ever-fresh plant.

5. Breezy Fabrics:

While not an essential element of a wabi-sabi inspired home, I personally feel that incorporating light, flowing fabrics like sheer curtains or soft cream-hued curtains can enhance the airy and soft feel of a space—key factors I want to achieve in my home.

Creating a wabi-sabi inspired home is all about enjoying the simple things and appreciating the little imperfections. By using natural materials, soft colors, and keeping things minimal and connected to nature, you can make your space feel calm and genuine.
