You’ve just started/ starting your running journey, you are looking to find a new pair of running shoes but you are not sure what to buy? Don’t worry, let me guide you to your first pair of running shoes!πŸ‘Ÿ

There are many different types of running shoes in the market, and sometimes I even get confused by looking at the different types of shoes. Generally, there are 4 wide categories of running shoes we look at. 1) Daily Running / Recovery Runs , 2) Long Runs / Speed Workouts, 3) Racing, 4) All-Rounder.

Before we dive into the 4 different categories of running shoes, ask yourself this question, β€œDo I prefer Cushioned or Stable shoe? Do I want a light or heavy shoe? What’s my budget?” πŸ€”

DAILY RUNNING - As the name suggests, it is a pair that is used for daily training, easy runs, and has a good lifespan.

1) Nike Pegasus 39 - $205 (Heavy, Stable)

The Pegasus shoe lineup is one of the most trust-worthy and many runners love to use it for their daily training and easy runs, it also performs well if you are thinking to pick up the pace or running longer distances, it also has a very long lifespan thanks to its very durable rubber outsole. However it is a shoe on the heavier side, which makes many runners avoid it too.

2) Hoka Mach 5 - $229 / Asics Novablast 3 - $199

Both Hoka Mach and Asics Novablast are superb daily trainers that many runners across the world recommend. Both shoes are very lightweight, have good cushioning and stability. Both shoes are able to handle long distance runs and faster pace workouts. These shoes are also often seen even in races, like half-marathon and marathon. However the lifespan might not be as long lasting as the Pegasus lineup, as it has lesser rubber outsole compared to the Pegasus.

LONG RUN / SPEED WORKOUTS - These shoes are often more expensive as it has better technology that helps runners go the extra miles or help runners with their speed workouts. These are also shoes that allow runners to train for their races such as the marathon.

1) Nike Zoom Fly 5 - $245 (Heavy, Stable, Carbon Plated)

Coming in hot, at a very rather steep priceπŸ’Έ, the Nike Zoom Fly 5 is one of the shoes that I like running in when it comes to longer distance runs - 8k, 10k, etc. Although, most experienced runners might disagree with me on this pair due to its heavy weight and rigid midsole for running. However, this is one of my favorites to run in when I go for longer distance running, and the construction of the shoe gives me good energy return, and the carbon plate in it propels me forward. It has also a good lifespan with the rubber it has on the Zoom Fly 5.

RACING SHOES - These are shoes that most racers race in for Half-Marathon, Marathon, or NSF’s favourite 2.4km runs. I wouldn’t recommend getting these shoes just yet if you’re just starting out running.

ALL-ROUNDER - The can do-it-all shoe.

I personally feel that it would definitely be the Hoka Mach 5 and Asics Novablast 3 as these are often seen in marathon racing as well. Hence, I feel these are the best and most valued for money as well.
