4 things to know before backpacking Europe part 1🌍

1. People visiting visa-free from outside of the EU and the EEA are limited to 90 days in 180 days in the Schengen zone

This applies to US and UK citizens, for example. You can visit the Schengen zone without a visa but you can stay max. 90 days within any 180-day period.

2. If you want to stay for longer than 3 months at once, split your time between Schengen and non-Schengen countries

Some examples of European countries you could spend time in instead of Schengen countries are Ireland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Romania, the UK, Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

3. For a more budget-friendly trip, spend more time in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Northern and Western Europe are the most expensive parts of Europe. If you are on a tight budget, I’d recommend spending more time in the Balkans (Southeast Europe) and Eastern Europe. Great countries to visit on a budget are Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.

4. If you want to visit Southern Europe on a budget, visit lesser-known destinations.

It is possible to visit countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece on a budget but you should opt for less touristy destinations to find cheaper accommodation, food, and activities.
