Is the Toboggan Ride in Madeira Worth It?

The Toboggan is easily one of the most expensive, touristy activities we participated in on our 3-week trip to Portugal and Spain.

This is a pretty famous "attraction" in Madeira, Portugal to be more specific and involves you getting on a toboggan - a sort of sled made of wicker basket with wheels that is "driven" downhill by two specially trained men (similar to gondoliers you could say?). Essentially it’s a mode of transport that was utilized in earlier decades but now is mostly a tourist attraction. So yes it absolutely is a tourist trap BUT: a super fun one!

🎩 It starts at Caminho do Monte 4, 9050-288 Funchal, Portugal

🎩 Expect a long queue - we lined up for maybe 20mins because the drivers all have to wait at the bottom of the hill and take a ride back up with the sledges.

🎩 Cost: 35 euros for 2 people! Only paid in cash at a booth.

🎩 The ride is 2 kilometers down a winding descent and two professional “drivers” steer the toboggan, takes about 10mins

🎩 One toboggan fits 1-3 people, costs ranging from €27.50 to €52.50

🎩 It ends in the town of Monte where there is a gift shop, ATM, and is about a 20min downhill walk to the main part of town.

🎩 The road it goes along is public so you can expect to share the route with other vehicles

Our opinion: it was so fun and totally worth it 😆 If you have the euros to spare, I would highly recommend it.
