One of our main goals on our 3-week trip to Spain and Portugal was to hike Madeira's Pico to Pico trail. It's an 11-km trail connecting 2 of Madeira's 3 highest peaks including Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. It got very challenging in a lot of parts but the views were soooo beautiful!!
PICO TO PICO (PR1)
Madeira, Portugal
π The trail is 11-km with 1000 meters elevation loss+gain = equivalent to TWO Empire State Buildings worth of climbs and descents! Yes - we were sore for 3 days.
π It takes approximately 3-6 hours to finish depending on your fitness level and speed. We took 4.5hrs with alot of stops for photos and some resting points.
π It's considered a challenging hike, but many 60+ year olds do this trail! You only need a level of physical fitness and need not be a professional whatsoever :)
π This trail has one of the BEST views I've ever seen on a trail - it's pretty scenic throughout! With perfect weather conditions, you'll be hiking with the clouds. You can do this hike one way or two-way if you're an advanced hiker. Hiking one-way will require for you to book a driver to drop you off and pick you up on both sides (it takes about an hour to drive between each point, we paid about $40 for our pick up and drop off service).
π As always, when engaging in physical activity in the great outdoors - always take precaution and use your best judgement! Hiking shoes are perfect but not required - we were able to hike in running shoes! The trail is also well maintained with pavers and railings for you to hold on to.
π Don't forget: sunscreen, some snacks, and plenty of water!
Is this hike on your bucketlist??
