I decided to study Genesis 29-35 a few months back since I always found the story of Jacob, Leah & Rebecca so troubling. I’m just now documenting my thoughts which haven’t changed since then.

Over the years, I’ve heard countless of preachers use Jacob as a reference on the kind of man you want to date. The guy that works 14 years for you because he loves you. Sure, Jacob loved Rebecca but what about Leah? Despite the circumstances, shouldn’t Jacob chosen to love Leah simply because that’s the wife that was given to him, regardless of how he felt about the trade-off with Labon?

I think about how scripture is referred to her as hated.

“When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.”

‭‭Genesis‬ ‭29‬:‭31

I’m sure God noticed that Leah must have been grieved in some way so he lessens that burden by giving her a child.

Throughout scripture, Leah has children and she says “now my husband will love me”

It doesn’t matter how many kids she has, Jacob’s heart for her doesn’t change.

This brings me to think about how often I’ve heard pastors in the past mention Leah’s delicate eyes & how Jacob was bamboozled.

But what about Leah made her unlovable? Didn’t she deserve love because she was a human.

There’s not enough children that she could have that could ever make Jacob love her.

There was no reason as to why she should’ve been hated.

It often makes me think about the women in my life who have begged for a guy’s approval, begged to be chosen, changed everything about themselves all in pursuit of the love of a man.

God saw Leah. He chose her and out of her lineage came Jesus.

The most important thing that I’ve gotten out of this was that God sees you. Despite feeling pain because you were rejected by the guy that you might be obsessing over, God doesn’t reject you. God will choose you even when others don’t. Your works won’t get the guy to like you. You are enough to God and that’s all that matters.
