Hi everyone! I figured this would be a good time to share my experience with being diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and how I managed it during pregnancy.

A little about me, I’m a relatively healthy adult who lives a pretty active lifestyle. I didn’t think I would fail the one hour test but I did so then I had to take the 3 hour fasted one. I got a call that same evening saying I failed that test as well. I was shocked and in tears, wdym how can this be? I don’t eat much sugar or crave carbs. Just so we all know it is not our body, it’s the placenta 🙃

Anyway my OB had me go speak with a nutritionist who explained to me proper eating and showed me how to you the glucose monitor and when to test.

I had to test first thing in the morning fasted and then two hours after each meal. For my pregnancy my OB recommended that my blood sugar levels stay under 100mg or I would need insulin and I may need to schedule an induction if blood sugar is out of control by 36 weeks.

Some things that helped were more meals catered to protein and healthy fats and to stay away from carbs(mostly since my body could not process them properly during this time) I would also go for walks between meals to stay active. My whole pregnancy I gained about 15 pounds.

With having gestational diabetes I had to submit my blood sugar levels weekly at my OB as well as bring in the glucose meter for them to verify I wasn’t fibing 😂. I would go in for bi weekly ultrasounds to make sure little baby was growing well and to avoid any complications. My healthcare team was fantastic and made sure I was on track to delivering a healthy baby. I did not need an induction as I went into labor naturally.

Delivery was a different story 🤦‍♀️ I almost died due to my blood pressure tanking and had to receive a blood transfusion. I’m very grateful for the nurses for staying on top of everything as they saved my life and my daughters.
