Studies have shown that the first 15 minutes after you leave the house are the most stressful for your pet (especially for dogs who struggle with separation anxiety).

I’ve previously posted about how putting a lick mat down for them can help distract them, and ease their anxiety. However, if you’d rather not leave wet/sticky food out in your home, you could also try a treat dispensing toy!

Treat dispensing puzzle toys can keep your dog occupied for well past 15 minutes. So not only will it get them past that first bit of separation, it will also keep them stimulated and entertained, stopping them from getting bored or engaging in destructive behaviors.

I personally have a different style that is larger and has a clear top for my dogs to see the treats that are inside. However, a dog’s sense of smell is MUCH stronger than ours, so it’s not necessary for them to see the treats. It may actually be more fun for them to “hunt” the treats they cannot see, but can only smell.
