Socialization

Inappropriate socialization can cause anxiety in

dogs and be overwhelming. This could lead to a bad experience then to reactivity and fear in the future!

I also avoid large play group facilities or dog parks when socializing my dog! Why? Because I cannot control the interactions. Negative experiences can lead to future problems! Instead aim for structured play groups with dogs you know. Also working on training skills around other dogs. This will teach your dog not every dog they see is to play with. Impulse control is important…. To achieve this you may have to start at a large distance from the trigger!

Exposure does not mean letting your dog say hi to every person or animal they see. Think positive experiences around new things. If I have a super social puppy it is about balance! If my puppy learns that they always say hi to everyone they will think every dog/person is for them! This leads to an unruly and reactive dog. Not every dog/person needs to be approached! My goal is to aim for at least 3 new places a week. I’ll get them out and just give them food and play with them having a good time! Think new surfaces, sounds, items, moving things, etc. and of course LOTS of rewards! 🐶💗
