Hey Lemonades happy tuesday 🍋
Let’s talk about the difference between this phrases.
안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) & 안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo) are both formal phrases that are translated to “goodbye”, but they are different.
🍋 안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) is said as “goodbye” to a person who is leaving, while
안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo) is said as a “goodbye” to a person who is staying.
Hmm okay, let’s understand why 🤔
🍋 안녕히 (annyeonghi) is roughly translated as “safely” or “peacefully”, while the word 가세요 (gaseyo) comes from verb 가다 (gada) means to go
🌸안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) = go peacefully
🍋 계세요 (gyeseyo) comes from 계시다 (gyesida) which is the honorific from of 있다 (ittda) means to be
🌸 안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo) = stay peacefully
🍋 that’s why 안녕히 가세요 (annyeonghi gaseyo) is only ever said to the one leaving and 안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo) is only ever said to the one staying.
